WELCOME TO MY PAGE, WHICH I HOPE WILL AMUSE YOU

Born in Edinburgh, I come from a long line of professional musicians, the fifth generation out of six, and the third composer. At the early age of eleven, I completed my first three act opera, based on a Viking scenario, and then developed a two act Somerset Maugham musical on THE FALL OF EDWARD BARNARD. Neither of these has seen the light of day as yet, but the third teenage opera, a fifteen minute one act THE GODDESS OF THE MOUNTAIN was premiered at the EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE in 1972. The last of these teenage works, THE GLASS MENAGERIE (excerpt on OPERA page), was completed prior to leaving Scotland to study at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I was awarded the Wainwright Scholarship for composition.
I completed my studies at the London Opera Centre.
Since then, my career has been split between performing and composing. Stage appearances include JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (Vaudeville Theatre, London), THE RATEPAYERS’ IOLANTHE (Phoenix Theatre), the original cast of ME AND MY GIRL with Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson (Adelphi), and the Joe Papp version of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE (Palladium). National tours include ANNIE (as Bert Healy) and EVITA. One of my favourite jobs was as Buonafede in Haydn’s opera IL MONDO DELLA

LUNA which toured around stately homes in England. Other roles include the Chief Justice in the London Premiere of Gershwin's OF THEE I SING (Bridewell Theatre) Gilfain in FLORODORA (Finborough Theatre) and regular appearances in Ian Marshall Fisher's LOST MUSICALS at Sadlers Wells. (FANNY, SILK STOCKINGS, EVENING PRIMROSE, FLOWER DRUM SONG, PARK AVENUE) In April 2005 CAIRO OPERA (Egypt) presented a concert of songs from my shows, In 2002 I composed a song for Tres Hanley Milman's wedding in New York,and recent commissions for special occasional songs include the 40th Anniversary of International Students House, the location of the first photo here.
